Wikipedia and open protocol

Do you still remember the Encyclopedia Britannica? Hardly anyone could have imagined that Wikipedia could ever replace Britannica, a symbol of authority. Currently, Wikipedia encompasses more information than any other encyclopedia on the Internet. And not only that: every second of every day huge amounts of information are being uploaded to Wikipedia by someone.

Wikipedia began with the idea that anyone could write and update content. The reason why what began with skepticism has been able to gather such a huge amount of information is because of constant efforts to improve “protocols.” Also, Wikipedia’s rules of operation are constantly being added to and improved. For example, content that needs to be reviewed by experts, advertising and sometimes controversial content must be approved by the project management.

The reason I mentioned the encyclopedia is so I can easily explain the changes to the protocol. If you translate the word protocol, which is commonly used, to Korean, you call it ‘convention’. Protocols on the Internet regulate the smooth exchange of data between computers from one device to another.

In fact, the Internet itself originally began as an open protocol. This means that anyone can make a proposal to this protocol and have a guarantee that this protocol will not be changed easily. Under this agreement, companies like Google have emerged, whose storage space exceeds the entire Internet.

There were not many reasons for those with overwhelming data to adhere to the Internet standards. However, the reason their own league became popular was that it was fast because it did not go through the agreement process, and the entry barrier was low because users could use the fast service for free. Now, a new trend is forming in the direction where blockchain-based “voice and exit” is possible.

Take the Bitcoin node for example. It’s easy to participate in Bitcoin nodes. You can participate at the same time as execution. Conversely, turning off the software leaves that node. This philosophy of the blockchain applies not only to turning off and shutting down software, but also to the philosophy of community operation.

Sovereign intervention, sovereign identity, emerges here. Anyone can participate at any time and always be left out. All of this is possible through the open source configured by the open protocol. Instead of starting with someone’s full support, the era of explosive growth comes with the emergence of new contributors when the conditions of the virtuous cycle are right.

You are probably wondering why you are then talking about transforming the Internet again by advocating Web 3.0. What we should not forget is that the Internet is a software-based network that can be changed at any time. In the past, the Internet was created by consensus and operated with protocols created by humans. Even at this moment, many protocols are being proposed and abolished at the same time.

The possibilities of Internet software are endless. The only limit is our ability to design a protocol. The Internet is still at an early stage of development and it is very likely that the core services will undergo a complete facelift in the coming decades. And that direction is now towards Web3.
